Jon Jones vs Ciryl Gane: Prediction, Odds and More

By Harry Bazley

Ufc

Jon Jones is one of the most successful UFC light heavyweights in the history of the sport, but during his reign as champion, he always had one eye on the heavyweight belt...

Even in the build up to fight against Dominick Reyes in February 2020, Jones couldn't take his mind off the heavyweight division. He told ESPN at the time - "I feel like I really want to fight Stipe Miocic. I feel like I could beat him."

In may last year, Jones had his sights set on yet another heavyweight - Francis Ngannou - whose power had been dominating the weight class. Jones took to Twitter to call out Ngannou, saying "All that power means nothing when your haymakers are too slow."

After a three year hiatus from the octagon, Jones is finally putting his money where his mouth is...

Jon 'Bones' Jones will be fighting Ciryl 'Bon Gamin' Ganes for UFC 285 on Saturday, March 4, 2023, inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. When the bell rings, one man will be crowned the new UFC Heavyweight Champion.

Jones vs Gane Prediction

Jon Jones, widely regarded as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history, is making his much-anticipated heavyweight debut against the rising star Ciryl Gane.

Jones is undoubtedly a great striker and there's a chance he could land a big shot, but for him to be successful, he will need to focus on taking the fight to the ground. Gane has had difficulties in this area in the past, as evidenced by his loss to Ngannou.

And it sounds like this is exactly what Jones plans to exploit.

On the other hand, Gane's path to victory lies in preventing takedown attempts, using his larger body frame to his advantage, and staying on his feet to fully exploit his lethal striking combinations. As this is Jones first fight in the weight class, Gane should be able to use his experience fighting as a heavyweight to his advantage.

Gane's agility and mobility, akin to that of a welterweight fighter, will also be critical in keeping his distance from Jones and avoiding a clinch battle with the former light heavyweight champion.

If Gane manages to evade Jones' takedown attempts, he will be able to unleash powerful strikes. This has been a very effective approach for Jones' former opponents, such as Lyoto Machida, Alexander Gustafsson, Thiago Santos, and Dominick Reyes, who were all able to inflict damage on "Bones'' by staying on their feet.

This fight is set to be a clash of two different styles coming together. If Jones can utilise his grappling skills and tire Gane out, he may have a chance to secure the win. However, if Gane can keep the fight standing and land some heavy shots, he could potentially pull off the upset.

The bottom line: While Jones is undoubtedly the more experienced fighter, Gane's power could prove to be a formidable challenge, but if the fight goes to the ground, expect Jones to take home the heavyweight title.

Prediction: Jon Jones to win by TKO in the 5th round
